About Harmony Tribe
At Harmony Tribe Sarah teaches a wide range of glorious rounds and part-harmony songs from around the world, by ear without anyone having to read music, and sung a capella without accompaniment. There is an emphasis on singing for enjoyment, relaxation, and friendly community. Through gentle encouragment, enthusiasm and humour Sarah creates an atmosphere where even beginners feel able to share their voices and grow in confidence, and where more experienced singer can feel satisfied singing gorgeous harmonies.
Being part of a monthly group means you can enjoy the benefits of singing in harmony with others without there being too much of a time commitment. And the Harmony Tribe Singing Pass is designed to allow flexibility as to how often and which group/groups you attend, making it even easier to fit Harmony Tribe into your life.
All voices* are welcome at a Harmony Tribe monthly group and no singing experience is necessary. The groups are for adults and accompanied teens age 15+.
(* Harmony Tribe groups are not suitable for the learning disabled, hearing impaired or those with voice control issues.)
What to expect at Harmony Tribe
Harmony Tribe sessions begin with a simple body and voice warm-up. Sarah then teaches a number of songs using 'call and response'. Songs are learnt from scratch, part-by-part, then and there in the session, and sung a capella without accompaniment or backing tracks. Songs are sung from the heart and with enjoyment to the best of the group's ability, but there is never an intention of 'perfecting' songs. Harmony Tribe groups never perform to an audience. There is always a short break for tea and biscuits and a bit of socialising.
Songs at Harmony Tribe
At Harmony Tribe we sing a wide range of songs from all around the world, in English and other languages. We sing rounds and part-harmony songs, old and 'traditional' to brand new from contemporary composers, and many other songs inbetween. Most songs you probably will never have heard before, but they are all great to sing. Each month we sing new songs as well as revisiting ones that were particularly good to sing or that are suitably seasonal. (We do not sing pop, classics, show tunes or ecclesiastical music.)
Why Harmony Tribe monthly groups are not 'choirs'
For Harmony Tribe there are no auditions and we never perform. Also, there is no reading from musical notation, we sit in a circle rather than in traditional rows, you do not have to know what 'part' you sing (ie, alto, soprano etc) or stick with one part, and there is no expectation that you attend every month (though Sarah would like you to!)
Who can attend Harmony Tribe
All types of voices and levels of singing experience are welcome at Harmony Tribe, from total beginners to advanced singers. If you are very nervous and/or haven't sung for ages (or ever!) Sarah will put you at ease, helping you slowly but steadily find your voice and grow in confidence: if you are an experienced singer there will be enough challenge for you to have a satisfying sing too.
